Wedelia trilobata
Wedelia trilobata is a perennial evergreen plant in the family Asteraceae. The most distinctive feature of this species is that its middle leaves are typically three-lobed, resembling a trident, with both surfaces rough and hairy. This species is renowned for its year-round evergreen foliage, its striking yellow flowers, and its remarkable adaptability. It is highly tolerant to drought, waterlogging, and nutrient-poor soils, while also being tolerant to strong winds and salt — characteristics that have led the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to list it as one of the world’s worst invasive alien species.
As it primarily reproduce asexually, it grows vigorously and spreads at a remarkable pace, and is therefore used as a ground cover plant for horticulture and artificial slopes, where it can effectively stabilise severely eroded hillsides and prevent soil erosion. However, when planting this species, regular monitoring and proper management are required to prevent it from spreading excessively and outcompeting native plants.
