Hance's Viburnum

Viburnum hanceanum

In the warmth of spring, Hance's Viburnum always presents itself in a bewildering manner: clusters of small yellowish white flowers bloom at the tips of the branches, bearing the mission of reproduction; in contrast, white sterile flowers at the periphery resemble the outstretched wings of butterflies. At first glance, it seems like a group of butterflies has settled upon the branches.

Hance's Viburnum is elegant in form, but its wild population in Hong Kong is scarce, found only in locations such as Pat Sin Leng and Lantau Island. It has been listed in Rare and Precious Plants of Hong Kong. Through seed collection and propagation, it has been cultivated in the Hong Kong Wetland Park as an ex-situ conservation measure.
