餘甘子 (油甘子)
Myrobalan

Phyllanthus emblica

Myrobalan is a native tree or shrub in Hong Kong, commonly found on hillsides and in the periphery of villages. Clusters of small yellow flowers bloom between spring and summer, serving as a good nectar source for insects; and in midsummer, the branches are laden with spherical, yellowish-green drupes (stone fruits), providing food for certain birds and mammals.

The fruits of Myrobalan are crispy and juicy, and were once greatly enjoyed by the public —taste sour and puckery at the first bite, yet followed by lingering sweetness. Besides being eaten fresh, the fruits are also traditionally processed into candied fruits, fruit vinegar, and tea.

The uses of Myrobalan extend well beyond the palate: the dried leaves can be used as pillow stuffing, which is not only comfortable and breathable, but also releases a gentle fragrance that helps one sleep.
