Aquatic Plants

荷花
Indian Lotus
Nelumbo nucifera

Indian Lotus is a typical emerged aquatic plant with flowers and leaves emerged above water. Its stem, 'rhizomes', grows horizontally in the muddy stratum underwater. Indian Lotus has developed special structures to help it adapt to aquatic environment: there are air channels inside leaf stalks and rhizomes to facilitate respiration under water; the leaf surface has wax layer to remove water splashes quickly.
