Water Cress
Nasturtium officinale
Water Cress (along with other plants under the family Brassicaceae such as Flowering Chinese Cabbage and Cabbage) serves as a larval food plant for the butterflies Small Cabbage White and Indian Cabbage White. When Water Cress is in season during winter, occasionally, dozens of these butterflies can be seen fluttering over the Water Cress field at “Wetlands at Work” in the Wetland Park. They chase each other, with some mating while others are busy laying eggs. At first glance, these butterflies create a delightful scene that resembles small white flowers blooming across the field.
