Variegated Shell Ginger
Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’
Variegated Shell Ginger is a cultivar of Shell Ginger, featuring variegated patterns of yellow and green on its leaves, distinctly different from the solid green leaves of the regular Shell Ginger. During its flowering period from April to June, white flower clusters with yellow and orange markings emerge and hang down from the top, perfuming the air.
Both Variegated and the regular Shell Ginger produce adequate nectar and pollen in their flowers, attracting pollinating insects. Their leaves also serve as food for the caterpillars of several butterfly species, including Restricted Demon, Metallic Cerulean and Grass Demon.
